Can Creativity Save the World?

a film by Hermann Vaske

2023 marks the launch of „Can Creativity Save the World?“, the third part of his creative saga. In the film Hermann is questioning whether the extraordinary power of imagination and creativity can address the existential threat we’re facing as a planet and a species. The answers came from some unusual people – people universally considered to be among the world’s greatest creative minds. Our hope is that these visionaries can show us how to identify our own creativity – how to free it up and how to apply that creativity to a needy world.

„Can Creativity Save the World“ features actors such as Cate Blanchett, Isabella Rossellini, Golshifteh Farahani and Willem Dafoe; and musicians such as Björk, Campino and David Bowie. artists such as Marina Abramovic, Shirin Neshat and; activists like Pussy Riot and Luisa Neubauer and the best chess player of all time Garry Kasparov.

Why Are You Creative?

by Hermann Vaske

The Why Are You Creative project is an exploration into the many facets of creativity: artistic, philosophical, political and scientific. For more than 40 years, filmmaker Hermann Vaske has been talking about creativity with the world’s most fascinating artists and thinkers as part of a personal odyssey.

The result: a collection of over 1,000 answers and artifacts, as well as over 1,000 conversations captured on film and video, in which creative people from a wide range of disciplines answer the question „Why are you creative?“

The collection is a multiverse of creativity beyond all boundaries. Included are directors such as Steven Spielberg, David Lynch, Christoph Schlingensief, Terry Gilliam, Abel Ferrara and Wim Wenders, musicians such as David Bowie, Björk, Iggy Pop, Blixa Bargeld, Dieter Meier, Nick Cave and Bono, writers such as Günter Grass, Umberto Eco and Michel Houellebecq, artists such as Sputniko! Marina Abramovic, Ai Weiwei, David Hockney, Lu Yang, Jonathan Meese, Georg Baselitz, Julian Schnabel, Tobias Rehberger, Neo Rauch and Rosemarie Trockel, fashion designers such as Vivienne Westwood and Yohji Yamamoto, actresses such as Cate Blanchette, Angelina Jolie, Isabella Rossellini, Charlotte Gainsbourg and Tilda Swinton, actors such as Willem Dafoe, Dennis Hopper, Harvey Keitel and Sean Penn, scientists such as Stephen Hawking and Wolf Singer, architects such as Zaha Hadid, Daniel Libeskind, Oscar Niemeyer and Frank Gehry, activist such as Luisa Neubauer and Pussy Piot, philosophers such as Slavoj Zizek, Nobel Prize laureate such as Nelson Mandela and the Dalai Lama.

All contributors have created an artifact for the project, some very personal, others bizarre. Like Giorgio Gosetti, the director of Giornate degli Autori of the Venice Film Festival said: „Why Are We Creative“ is more than a movie.

The Creative Trilogy Films

The Why Are You Creative project is the basis of the Why Are You Creative TV series and of the Creativity Trilogy of 3 feature length films: Why Are We Creative, Why Are We Not Creative and Can Creativity Save the World. Why Are We Creative premiered at the Venice Film Festival in the presence of renowned artist Marina Abramovic who came to Venice to support the project.

The films were shown in almost every country in the world and at other prestigious film festivals like Festival de Cannes, Palm Springs International Film Festival and Raindance Film Festival in London, Filmfest Munich, Shanghai International Film Festival and Warsaw International Film Festival.
